One of the most important things to think about when you're remodeling is lighting: It can make or break the room.

If you think about it in layers, it's easy to see the light!
The first layer is ambient lighting, which should never seem like it's coming from a single source. You want recessed or semi-recessed down lights, or cans, or wall-washing fixtures like sconces to spread the light around.
The next layer is task lighting. Whether it's under-cabinet LED strips, pendants over an island, or a reading light over an easy chair, you want strong, separately controlled lighting when and where you need it.
Then, there's accent lighting, focused on the room's best features-cove lighting above a bathtub, spot lights on art objects, or lamps with wide shades that pool light on a table. They're great accents for a layered look that makes your room come alive.
